Public Safety

Community-based crime prevention
  • Expand community-led violence interruption programs

  • Support neighborhood watch programs and community safety coalitions

  • Invest in community centers and youth programs that provide safe spaces and positive alternatives to street life

  • Create lighting improvement initiatives for dark streets and alleys that create opportunities for crime

  • Support "Clean and Green" programs that transform vacant lots into community assets, reducing blight and crime hotspots

  • Advocate for expanded victim services including counseling, legal assistance, and financial support

  • Support programs that help families affected by violence, including grief counseling and trauma services

  • Push for witness protection resources so residents can report crimes without fear of retaliation

  • Ensure domestic violence survivors have access to emergency shelter, legal advocacy, and safety planning

Supporting victims
Transparency
  • Publish regular public safety reports with crime statistics and trends for District 41

  • Hold community safety forums where residents can voice concerns and suggestions

  • Ensure community input in public safety planning and resource allocation
Work with community organizations to measure trust and satisfaction with public safety efforts

Safety First

True public safety comes from strong, connected communities where people look out for each other, where young people have opportunities and hope, where those who struggle with addiction or mental health issues get treatment instead of incarceration, and where everyone has a stake in their neighborhood's wellbeing.

I reject the false choice between supporting police and supporting communities. We can have both effective law enforcement and investment in prevention. We can hold people accountable for harm while also addressing the conditions that lead to crime. We can be both compassionate and firm in our commitment to safety.
